The school now sits in the top four nationally.

Lower Sixth pupils, Megan, Evangeline and Elizabeth travelled to the Royal Society to accept their award.

Their project simulated asteroids hitting the surface of the moon by using 3D printed spheres as asteroids and flour as the moon’s surface.

Megan said: ‘By 3D printing our own spheres, we could easily change variables such as the density or radius of the asteroid, as well as the height at which it was dropped from, allowing us to simulate many different scenarios which may occur in real life.’

Head of Physics at Mayfield, Dr Darragh Corvan, said: ‘ They have worked so hard and came up with creative solutions to the problems they were faced with. It is a real testimony to what curiosity and engagement with Physics and STEM can achieve.’
