A carefully handmade ‘A-Z of Sussex’ caught the eye of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex whilst they were on their first trip to the county from which they take their name. Lovingly made by 13 Year 6 pupils at local Westbourne House School, the A-Z of local Sussex attractions earned the children royal approval, which was captured by the media and transmitted worldwide.

Each pupil had chosen two letters of the alphabet and researched local places, food and famous people to match, as they were keen to encourage the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to visit again. It included pages on “D is for Dell Quay”, “F is for Fishbourne Roman Palace”, “K is for Kipling”, “G is for Goodwood’s The Kennels”, “T is for Trundle” and, of course, “W is for Westbourne House, the most amazing school in Sussex”.

On emerging from Edes House, West Street, Chichester, Meghan Markle was first to shake the pupils’ hands, saying, “I need to know all of your names!” The A-Z, which to Meghan was an ‘A to Zee’, was presented to her by Alex Witcomb from Westbourne House. Prince Harry commented, “You lot have a very, very similar uniform to what I had at Wetherby in London” after asking which school the children were from.

After several pieces to camera with various media outlets, which gave every pupil their moment in the limelight, they took the short journey back to school to rejoin classes, overjoyed by a truly once in a lifetime experience.  As one pupil said, “This was the best day of my life.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were later spotted having lunch in The Kennels, so the A – Z of Sussex must have been an informative read!
