Pupils at South Hampstead High School produce zero plastic ‘eco’ poppies for Remembrance Day.

Girls at South Hampstead High School GDST have produced plantable eco poppies for Remembrance Day. Pupils in the school’s design & technology club have created the flowering poppies as part of Project Zero, a pupil-led initiative that aims to reduce the school’s environmental impact by 2026 when the school celebrates its 150thanniversary.

Working with special biodegradable paper, embedded with wildflower seeds, the girls have created laser-cut poppies using biodegradable glue in the school’s design studios. After being worn, the poppies can be soaked in water then buried in earth, allowing the symbolic flowers to then grow, in homage to the poppies in the fields of Flanders.

Design & technology teacher, Ms Pearce, said: The girls have been so engaged with this innovative project. These poppies are deeply symbolic: a poignant tribute to remember those who made sacrifices during the war, as well as representing hope for a more peaceful – and a greener – future.’
