From September 2021 Aldro – a day and boarding prep school in Surrey for pupil– will begin moving to co-education, enabling more families to benefit from the school’s excellent academic and co-curricular offering.

The change will be implemented gradually over three years with the admission of day girls initially focused on years three, four and five; as these year groups move up, the school will become fully co-educational. All year groups, from age seven to 13, are expected to have both boys and girls by September 2024.

The move to co-education is in response to the demands of parents, both locally and further afield, seeking a family focused school to welcome both their sons and daughters. Research has shown the prep school market is evolving both locally and nationally with parents seeking broader educational options for their children with the same opportunities available within a shared school environment.

Although girls will initially join Aldro as day pupils, a new girls’ boarding facility is planned to open in September 2022, enabling girls, as well as boys, to board at Aldro if they so wish.

‘We are very proud of our position as a leading prep school, providing the highest quality all-round education and outstanding pastoral care to both day pupils and boarders,’ said Brian Kirkpatrick, chair of governors. ‘We are delighted now to be able to make available the benefits of an Aldro education to even more children.’

Chris Carlier, headmaster, added, ‘This announcement signals an important new chapter in the school’s history. From September 2021 all pupils will benefit from the academic, social and developmental benefits of a co-educational environment. With an ever-growing number of our pupils choosing to progress to co-educational senior schools, the move will help to ensure our pupils are more broadly prepared for their lives beyond Aldro. We very much look forward to welcoming the first girls through Aldro’s doors next September.’

Families interested in places for their children should contact Mrs Sheridan Charles, director of admissions and marketing, to arrange an individual tour of the school and a meeting with the headmaster.
